The Password Guard provides system administrators with password monitoring control never experienced before on Windows NT!

hank you for purchasing the Georgia SoftWorks Windows NT Password Guard Software. You will be pleased with the performance, robustness and unique features provided with this product.
For high security environments monitoring passwords is an additional level of comfort to the system administrator. Maintain access to all user passwords transparent to the user. Gain access to secure areas of your system without being noticed to ensure no inappropriate activity is occurring on your system. No need to reset a user password when forgotten, just look it up! Keep track of how frequently users change passwords and more.
The Georgia SoftWorks Windows
NT Password Guard is a tool for System Administrators who need advanced and
immediate password monitoring capabilities in highly secure environments.

Georgia SoftWorks Windows NT Password Guard consist of a system level driver
and a Graphical User Interface (GUI) Password Viewer. A command line viewer is
also included for users of services such as Telnet.
Once
installed the System Administrator will have access to all the Users Passwords
as historical data starts to accumulate. A variety of viewing formats are
available in addition to report and export capabilities.
NOTE: You must have
administrative privileges to install and use the Password Guard.

nstallation is simple and quick. The same installation program installs the Password Guard driver, the Password viewers and the Registration program.
Installation of the Password Guard is simple. Run the setup.exe program. From Windows NT perform the following:
Run the setup.exe program.
1. The Password Guard Install Shield screen of the setup program that contains the name and copyright information is displayed. Click Finish.
2. Files are unpacked and the splash screen is momentarily displayed.
3. Next, the Password Guard Setup Welcome screen is displayed, urging you to exit all Windows applications before proceeding with the installation. After reading the copyright information, click Next.
4. The Password Guard License Agreement screen is displayed. Please read and upon agreement select YES
5. The Choose Destination screen is now displayed. You may select the installation directory. Click Next.
6. The Select Program Folder screen is now displayed. After selecting Click Next.
7. The Setup complete screen is displayed prompting for the reboot of the computer. The reboot step is absolutely necessary!
The Password Guard is now installed.
To run the Password Guard you must first register the software. This entails just a few steps that involve obtaining a signature of the NT System that the Password Guard is installed, providing this signature to Georgia SoftWorks, and obtaining a registration key.
From the Start button on the task
bar, select Programs, then Password Guard and then Registration. The registration screen is

The Registration program will
determine the product and the version and compute the system signature.
Complete the registration information(Figure 2 - Registration: Customer
Information

2. ). The registration information must be provided to Georgia SoftWorks to obtain the registration key. Several methods are available for your convenience.
a. Print the information and Fax it to Georgia SoftWorks
b. Save the information to a file and email it to Georgia SoftWorks

3. Please print(using the print button on the registration screen) this information and fax to Georgia SoftWorks - 706.265.1020 or

4. Once we receive the information, we can generate a registration key on demand. We will reply back via Fax or email. You may close the registration program at this time.
When the Registration Key is received
run the registration program again and enter the key received from Georgia
SoftWorks in the Registration Information field on the screen(Figure 3 - Registration

Now the software is registered. You may now run the Password Guard.
NOTE: If the signature of the NT System is changed then a new registration key from Georgia SoftWorks must be obtained. Repeat the registration process.
After the system is rebooted the Password Guard is waiting for events that occur when users change their password at which point the Password Guard captures the password.
In order to accelerate the process to getting all passwords captured and ready for display the system administrator may take a number of different steps.
· Ask all users to change their passwords
· Change password for all users and notify them that their password has been changed.
· Enforce a minimum number of days that a password may be in existence.
NOTE: You must have
System Administrative privileges to run the Password Guard.
The Password Guard GUI Viewer is a powerful yet intuitive tool used for viewing the passwords and historical data. Sorting on columns, selecting specific User ID's and printing are available from the Password Guard GUI Viewer.

The display contains menu
items, a tool bar and a grid to facilitate immediate access to
the password information for the system administrator. The default display(Figure 5 - GUI Viewer:

) presents the list of User IDs and their current passwords, when the password was changed and the age of the password.

The Menu Bar contains these items
Generate a password report containing the data currently being displayed and send the output to the selected printer.

This menu selection allows modification of the selected printer or parameters.

This menu selection allows the system administrator to export the password information to a comma delimineted ASCII text file(Figure 6 - Export Password Data). Al fields are in double quotes. Upon selecting Export a prompt for the name and location for the exported file appears. The default export file is export.txt with the default directory as the installation directory.

This menu selection exits the Password Guard GUI program.
Filters allow the system administrator to select the Password data to display. The system administrator can choose combinations of historical password data, User ID password data and date ranges. Each of the filters are active when a check is adjacent to the menu item. In addition the Toolbar buttons are synchronized with the filter menu items.
Display the password history for all Users.

Allows the system administrator to select a specific user by highlighting the row and limit the password display to that User ID.

You may also view the password history of a single user by selecting the History button along with the user button.

Allows
the system administrator to select a date range for the password display. When
selected a calendar dialog is presented allowing input for the range of dates
of interest ( Figure 10 - GUI Viewer. Select a Date Range

The View determines whether the Tool Bar and the Status bars are displayed. A check adjacent to the menu item indicates whether the item is currently displayed.
Contains the Calendar, History, User, Print and About buttons.
The status bar is located at the bottom of the Windows and displays status information.
This menu item manually updates the grid to display any new password information. The grid automatically updates every xx minutes.
This displays the current version of the Password Guard GUI.
The grid is used to display the information for the system administrator. The data format displayed is used when a report is generated.
The columns are sizable by dragging the vertical bar that separates the titles. You may sort in ascending order by single clicking on the title of a column. Double clicking on the title of the column performs a descending sort. The columns may change depending on the filters selected.
The Windows NT User ID associated with the password.
The Windows NT Password.
This is the date and time that the password was changed.
This is the age in days of the password.
The Toolbar provides a quick and intuitive way to filter and print by providing a set of buttons that are easily accessible while working in the grid.
This invokes the calendar tool for selecting a date range for displaying the password range.
This switches between Historical and normal display mode.
This switches between a specific User ID and all User Ids. Note: A User ID row in the grid must be highlighted before this button will be selectable.
This button prints the current password information in a report format.
This displays the current version of the Password Guard GUI.
The Password Guard also has a command line viewer. This can be useful to System Administrators connected remotely via telnet.
Command: Pwd_read [-r] [-uUser]
-r produces a historical report
-u limits the output to a specific user
Examples:
Pwd_read Displays current passwords for all users
Pwd_read -r Displays password history for all users
Pwd_read -uBob Displays current password for user Bob

Note: You must have
system administrative privileges to use the Password Guard Command Line Viewer.
The Password Guard directory structure is as follows. The default installation directory is
C:\Program Files\Georgia SoftWorks\Password Guard
This directory contains the following files:
· PwdRd.exe - The graphical user interface Password Viewer
· Pwd_read.exe - The command line password viewer
· Mscal.ocx - The calendar ocx
· RegUser.exe - Registration software
· Uninst.isu - Unistall file
